The 2001 South by Southwest Film Festival , which is going on right now from [ March 9th ] through [ March 17th, 2001 ] , is set to host an incredible behind-the-scenes documentary that gets up-close and personal with the life and times (and multimillion dollar business empire) of Todd McFarlane — the most successful comic book artist ever.
“The Devil You Know: Inside the Mind of Todd McFarlane” takes an uncensored look into the day-to-day events in the “pop culture icon”‘s world:
In his new feature doc, filmmaker Kenton Vaughan tells the remarkable tale of a skinny baseball-crazed kid from Calgary, the doodling dreamer in the back row, who went on be a giant in popular entertainment.Todd McFarlane is driven, controversial and relentless in the pursuit of his goals.
Yet he lives a stable domestic life married to his childhood sweetheart, a level-headed beauty who helps him manage a multi-million-dollar empire. McFarlane’s creative powers have come together with a hard-headed business acumen to transform his fictional creation Spawn – a tortured soul caught between good and evil – into an industry that encompasses comic books, toys, animation, video games and movies.

The film will screen at SXSW on [ March 12th ] at 11:15 AM; [ March 13th ] at 9:30 PM and [ March 15th ] at 2:00 PM. For more on the doc, check out the National Film Board of Canada “Devil You Know” site.
