LOVE'S LABOURS LOST

By Chris Gore | June 9, 2000

“Love’s Labour’s Lost” is a romantic comedy, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh and based on the William Shakespeare play with the feel of a classic 1930’s Hollywood picture. The film also contains songs by Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Yep, it’s a musical!
The King of Navarre and his three friends vow to give up women for three years and study philosophy. They agree to not even be in the presence of women. Then the Princess of France shows up played by Alicia Silverstone along with a few of her hot friends. Of course, the guys can’t control themselves and they secretly meet unbeknownst to each other. The Princess’ father dies and the women return to France which has also just fallen to the Nazis! Everyone is hearbroken. Oh, the drama!
As with all musicals, if the story is no good, well, at least you can look forward to those great song and dance numbers. You know, the ones that always seem to slow down the movie. The funny thing is that when I think of great song and dance numbers, Kenneth Branagh, Matthew Lillard and Alicia Silverstone’s names just don’t seem to come to mind. In fact, Alicia Silverstone was better as Batgirl than in this piece of garbage. I don’t think she even understood what she was saying. This is yet another experimental film attempting to reinterpret Shakespeare and failing miserably.

I have just one question: you’re an idiot. I’m sure there are some real criticisms to be said about this film, but I was kind of hoping you’d tell me what they are. That is what REAL critics do.
