“Life on Christopher St.” makes its world premiere at OUTFEST 2002 on July 13th at the Director’s Guild of America, with additional screenings on July 16th and July 20th.
“Life on Christopher St.” is a short documentary exploring the rising subculture of black and latino gay youth who grew up inspired by the Hip-Hop generation. The people portrayed in this film are gay, yet maintain the aggressive, hyper-masculine image represented by the culture. The film includes interviews with gay rappers, Bloods gang members, pimps and prostitutes, which depict how the battle to maintain gay sexual individuality is difficult in a society that is misunderstood by homophobia.
According to director Maria Clara, production company 77 Films, “reveals a piece of the dark side Christopher Street possesses that not many people are proud of, but should be exposed too.” Producer Kimberly Gray explains, “The sole purpose for creating this work was to illustrate the trials and tribulations of minority youth on the streets confronting their sexuality in a society that lacks acceptance and understanding.”
