FILM THREAT’S 2007 ACADEMY AWARDS PREDICTIONS (PART 3)

By Mark Bell | February 20, 2007

The Film Threat audience voted over the past three weeks to let us know who they thought should win each of the top categories for the 2007 Academy Awards. Below you will find the audience predictions, and Film Threat’s predictions. Let’s end this up right!

In the category of Best Supporting Actor, the nominees are:
Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine
Jackie Earle Haley, Little Children
Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond
Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls: Film Threat Audience Selection!
Mark Wahlberg, The Departed

And Film Threat predicts…
Jackie Earle Haley, Little Children: Just like Robert Forster for Jackie Brown, this will seem strange but it would be typical Academy.

In the category of Best Supporting Actress, the nominees are:
Adriana Barraza, Babel
Cate Blanchett, Notes on a Scandal
Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine
Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls: Film Threat Audience Selection!
Rinko Kikuchi, Babel

And Film Threat predicts…
Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls: The Academy should do as expected with this one, joining in with the praises for Jennifer Hudson’s performance.

In the category of Best Actor, the nominees are:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Blood Diamond
Ryan Gosling, Half Nelson
Peter O’Toole, Venus
Will Smith, The Pursuit of Happyness
Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland: Film Threat Audience Selection!

And Film Threat predicts…
Peter O’Toole, Venus: Forest Whitaker deserves it, but O’Toole is an old guy about to die who’s been looked over his entire career. This is a make-it-up-to-you award.

In the category of Best Actress, the nominees are:
Penelope Cruz, Volver
Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal
Helen Mirren, The Queen: Film Threat Audience Selection!
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada
Kate Winslet, Little Children

And Film Threat predicts…
Helen Mirren, The Queen: No other political Academy considerations involved, so Helen Mirren should take this easily.

In the category of Best Director, the nominees are:
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Babel
Martin Scorsese, The Departed: Film Threat Audience Selection!
Clint Eastwood, Letters From Iwo Jima
Stephen Frears, The Queen
Paul Greengrass, United 93

And Film Threat predicts…
Clint Eastwood, Letters From Iwo Jima: Everyone and their mother will be screaming for Scorsese to win this one, and there’s an insanely off-chance that he might, but the Academy is more likely to award a soon-to-be-dead Eastwood for turning in a brilliant epic film. But we WANT Scorsese to win, and we’ll happily eat our words on this one.

In the category of Best Picture, the nominees are:
Babel
The Departed: Film Threat Audience Selection!
Letters From Iwo Jima
Little Miss Sunshine
The Queen

And Film Threat predicts…
The Departed: Oh, but the Academy will hand over Best Picture to Scorsese’s film, because they know that the Best Picture Oscar goes to the producer and, if you’re going to screw Marty over, why not go all the way?

There you have it, Film Threat’s predictions for the 2007 Academy Awards. We’ll most likely be wrong as much as we’re right, so please don’t judge too harshly, but this looks to be the shakes for the 2007 Oscars. Check back with Film Threat on Oscar Sunday (February 25, 2007) as we chat up and track the awards in our Back Talk forums.
