Spider-Man: Far From Home is not as good as Homecoming but it’s certainly not a bad film and a different film at that. Although it drags a little up front, the payoff is well worth it. The end credit stings is a great set-up for the third film. And be sure to watch Captain Marvel, or you’ll be lost at a certain point. Tom Holland can play Peter Parker for the rest of his life, and I’d still watch.

Providing a much-needed respite from all the doom-and-gloom of Avengers: Endgame, the fun Spider-Man: Far From Home is best described as Marvel’s take on 1980’s John Hughes teen dramedies. Its success hinges on the adolescent challenges of our titular hero, his relationship with girls and stoic stance on popularity; the predictable – but well-choreographed – action and expectedly bombastic finale come second to the fleshed-out characterizations and soapy drama. Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio doesn’t necessarily reinvent the comic-book supervillain but has some subversive, tongue-in-cheek moments. Light-hearted and quick on its feet, Spider-Man: Far From Home comes close to being a home run. 7 out of 10

Aside from having one of Marvel’s best codas, Spider-Man: Far From Home does little to separate itself from the super crowd. There are no memorable set-pieces or characters, and kids saying the darndest things can only take a movie so far. As with the recent Captain Marvel, Sam Jackson makes a movie infinitely more watchable. A ‘60s spy movie with Nick Fury as the lead is badly needed. Continuity be damned. Call it, “Our Man Squints.” Also, why haven’t these movies used the Ramones’ version of the Spider-Man cartoon’s theme song? 5/10
This movie has such a bad screenwriting job, even videogame adaptation did it better
