Scheme Queens

Unfortunately, the ending is a little too open-ended to satisfy fully. Without spoiling things, let’s just say it’s more interested in sequel baiting than properly concluding itself. This is a letdown, as these characters and their arcs are absorbing. Lauryn’s story, in particular, with its twists and turns, proves impossible to predict in the best way possible. Also, the screenplay is peppered with some great lines, such as when one of the ladies tells Audra that she always “thinks she is the smartest person in the room.” Audra quips back that “[she] is, but [she] doesn’t take credit for it.” This a hilarious way of explaining that no matter what she does, she gives credit to Jesus and God. The film is filled with quick quips that never fail to amuse.

“…dynamic and kinetic…”

While the ending of Scheme Queens is found wanting, the acting is not. Renee’ is incredible as Sam, making audiences instantly believe she’s tough and vulnerable. Simone is fun as the down-and-out social media influencer. She brings the comedy and drama to life equally well. Johnson is the broadest of all the cast, but she’s believable as someone who is too smart for her own good. Jacky Oh is the dramatic backbone, the glue that holds the other three together. She knocks it out of the park, especially minutes before the credits roll. Plus, the chemistry the four actors share is astounding; they feel like they’ve known each other forever.

While Scheme Queens does not have the most fulfilling denouement, it still works. The directing is slick and stylish, with exceptional cinematography. Singers-Beedles expertly balances the tone while keeping the stakes high. The cast is uniformly excellent, with the four leads sharing dynamite chemistry with each other. All in all, the story is flawed, but the technical aspects are flawless.
