Proximity

Alien abduction is usually the subject of drunken redneck ramblings or urban legend, as well as the basis of many films and television shows. Proximity takes an indie stab at this beloved subgenre of science fiction.

Isaac Cypress (Ryan Masson) is a NASA JPL scientist who looks like he just got out of high school from Pasadena, California. He goes for a hike in the mountains during a meteor landing. After a bit, Isaac is greeted by an alien creature that is very stereotypical – big head and eyes with grey skin and a skinny body. He runs but gets carried up into space anyways. Three days later, he is back. We don’t see anything that happens in the spacecraft, probably due to budgetary reasons, but maybe it was also an artistic choice.

“…both end up in white rooms with people dressed in alien-robot costumes.”

Isaac is seemingly lucky because he got video footage of the alien and his being sucked up into the air. He’s also left with the ability to move things with his mind. He decides to post the video online, and it gets a ton of traction. News channels and YouTube commenters around the country have a lot to say about it, and the general consensus is that it’s a hoax. Isaac decides to go another route and look for fellow abductees. He meets Sara (Highdee Kuan), who tells him about Carl Meisner (whose 1979 abduction starts the film).

He thinks he’s getting somewhere contacting other abductees until a blogger stops him. Isaac believes he’s making headway when he takes a lie detector test in the blogger’s office until two men in black suits and glasses kidnap him. He and Sara both end up in white rooms with people dressed in alien-robot costumes. Through a glass partition, he sees Agent Graves (Shaw Jones), who is there to test the potency of Isaac and Sara’s exposure to the aliens.

Personally I loved this movie, and have watched it several times. I really engaged with the characters, and I liked the fact that the actors were unknown as sometimes big names detract from the plot. The cinematography was captivating especially the out door scenes. I loved the special effects with the ISRP police basically white robots. I liked the way that Isaccs arm separates to reveal the tracker that was hidden inside. When the cabin is getting slot up I love the bit that shows a slow mo of a skull being split apart. I also liked the idea of aliens looking for their creator, just like the rest of us. All in all I thought that it was a great film, I’d give it 10 out of 10.
