Yaxing Lin’s short, One More Bite, is a cautionary tale of self-image and bulimia. Jiuming (Zoe Zou) is a young woman standing on a scale, counting every kilogram and removing clothes to nudge that number down to an acceptable weight… but what is acceptable?

For years, bulimia has been Jiuming’s tool to control her weight and appearance. Her condition has only been exacerbated through an illicit love affair with her superior. Unfortunately, seeing her lover with his spouse only sends Jiuming into depression, and eating brings her comfort.

“…standing on a scale, counting every kilogram and removing clothes to nudge that number down…”

In One More Bite, writer/director Yaxing Lin is less concerned with Jiuming’s narrative. But instead, the filmmaker exposes us to Jiuming’s thoughts and feelings. She dwells on thoughts of her appearance (i.e., body dysmorphia) and feelings of self-doubt, self-loathing, and control. As Jiuming spirals into deeper depression as her binging and purging becomes more intense.

Haunting is the best way to describe, One More Bite. Yaxing Lin masterfully places us in Jiuming’s shoes as we are given a small glimpse into the mind of someone suffering from an eating disorder. Zoe Zou also perfectly performs the role of our protagonist, capably walking a very thin tightrope.
