Cabeceó

This is going to be a quick review simply because this short film is about DANCE! Director Brian James Crewe’s Cabeceó is about a woman who walks into a dance club looking forward to whatever opportunity presents itself. In walks in a stranger, and immediately their eyes meet, and the flirtation begins.

Unfortunately, before she has a chance to walk across the room for the requisite small talk, two eager singles, who are ready to mingle, beat her to the punch. As the woman ponders what she should do, she is instantly whisked away to an empty dance floor, where she and the stranger begin to tango.

“…instantly whisked away to an empty dance floor, where she and the stranger begin to tango.”

Although I’m an admirer of dance, I can not call myself an expert at all, technical or otherwise. That said, Crewe does everything he needs to do throughout Cabeceó to capture the interest of an audience that feels the same way I do. First, he bookends the tango with a compelling story taking place at the nightclub. We understand exactly what is going on in the plot, which leads us to the characters’ feelings and emotions being told through the dance and choreography.

Second, the cinematography and editing are close to perfect in presenting a dance sequence. There are essentially three shots: facial close-ups, a wide angle to capture the pair’s entire bodies, and a medium shot on the dancers’ legs. The dance, its story, and the talents of the talent are now on full display.

Cabeceó is about DANCE! Crewe’s short film is impressive, engaging, and tells a sweet, simple story.
