Abnormal Attraction is a love story with silly gags featuring your favorite monsters from fantasy and horror. There are enough dick jokes, sight gags, and puns to keep your knee slapped for hours. Not really, I wish this film was better than it turned out to be.
I love a good comedy, but like many indie films begging for laughs, it rarely gets them. The problem here is we’re presented with humorous ideas, but ideas are not enough to trigger the laugh. It’s like loading a gun and never firing it. For example, there’s a whole routine on the monster Frank Stein…not Frankenstein…Frank Stein…Why? Because he’s Jewish. How about the vampire who wants to suck your…dick. Funny ideas, but there’s no punch line to trigger the laugh.
“A great deal of work was put into the make-up and costumes, and it’s commendable.”
Let’s also add a story that lays flat as well. We already talked about the romance problems between Nick and Alyssa, but then it’s your typical why can’t humans and monsters get along, and in this case, the stakes between the warring factions are not high enough to be interesting (see Blazing Saddles).
What’s good about Abnormal Attraction is its costume design. If anything, the monsters in this monster world look amazing. Not Stan Winston levels, but for an indie film, the quality is there. Bernie “the Cyclops” has an actual blinking eye in the middle of his head, and it looks fantastic…hell, it looks really cool. A great deal of work was put into the make-up and costumes, and it’s commendable. Unlike the jokes, nothing appears lazy at all.
I’ll admit I have a high standard for comedy, that I don’t typically give to dramas and documentaries. Only because bad comedy literally hurts to watch for an extended period of time and when it fails its noticeable. If you’re OK with silly humor, raunchy jokes, and incredible costumes, by all means, get your hands on Abnormal Attraction. Also, it’s got Bruce “freakin'” Davison in it, and he’s got a pretty meaty role. No cameo here. You’ve been warned.
