A Lovely Death is the vision of writer/director Miguel del Campo. It’s a DIY production involving a simple setup and simple production values. However, what the filmmaker lacks in cinematic production values, he more than makes up for with a touching love story told without dialogue and entirely through his actors’ physical performances.

The Grim Reaper (Roy Shellef) arrives as scheduled at the apartment of Felicity (Chantal Cassutt) and Arnold (Nico Elia Wander). However, they aren’t there at the moment. As Death passes by a bouquet of roses, his single touch kills them instantly.

“…Felicity was able to see the Grim Reaper save her.”

When the couple returns home, Arnold begins to attack Felicity. As she screams, Death steps in with a single touch and dispenses with Arnold. Inexplicably, Felicity was able to see the Grim Reaper save her. At that moment, she finds deep affection for her hero, and the two quickly fall for one another, knowing a single touch means death.

A Lovely Death shows that short films do not need to be complicated. Simplicity wins out in the end when you have a clear idea of your story and focus on telling it.
