‘He won’t be resurrected this time,’ – Thanos
Remember back in the day when the first ‘Thor’ came out and our protagonist thought of nothing but drinking and fighting? Since then, the God of Thunder has fallen on hard times and suffered unimaginable losses. During ‘Kingdom of Darkness,’ we witnessed the loss of his mother Frigga, which was so devastating that even Loki could barely hold himself together. In ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ we watched Thor lose his beloved father Odin and then faced the fact that Odin was not who he thought he was. He had a secret daughter named Hela.
Throughout this time, by Thor’s side was his brother Loki. These two brothers always had a complicated relationship filled with power struggles and strife, but it was always clear that deep down they cared for each other. During ‘Thor 3,’ it seemed that Loki was finally willing to work on their relationship, even risking his own life to save Thor and Asgard. This made his death during ‘Infinity War’ even more tragic. He intervened to save Thor and ended up being strangled by Thanos. It was tragic enough and Loki’s death literally devastated Thor, who later remarked that he had nothing more to lose at this point.
‘If you’re nothing without that suit, you don’t deserve it,’ – Tony Stark
It’s safe to say that many of us were alarmed when we heard that another Spider-Man movie was coming to cinemas, but Homecoming was a fantastic film that managed to give comic book fans a hefty dose of nostalgia. Tom Holland played a delightfully over-the-top teenager Peter Parker and we watched his journey of becoming a superhero. He was willing to tear himself apart to save a ferry full of passengers and was desperate to make a difference. Parker sacrificed some of his teenage angst to become Spider-Man despite the lack of support from the adults in his life.
And his mentor actually told him he was disappointed in him for obvious reasons. But even after Peter Parker was robbed of his high-tech suit, he didn’t stop fighting the good fight. He chased after Vulture in his first suit, which he made himself, and later became the victim of a building collapse. Although the scene was short, it was unbearably sad to watch a young Peter Parker screaming for help while under the rubble. Even worse was the fact that he was essentially all alone in that desperate moment, which served as a grim reminder that being a superhero means risking your life every time and sometimes heroes don’t always win.
‘We are Groot,’ – Groot
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was a great film filled with tones of laughter and an amazing soundtrack, but that doesn’t mean this film isn’t capable of bringing you to tears. Groot has become a fan favourite. The film showed that he has a good heart compared to the other Guardians of the Galaxy. When the Dark Astra went down, Groot stepped in to save his friends. He shielded them from a devastating disaster at the cost of his own safety. In his final moments, he uttered the words, – ‘We are Groot.’ According to Zoe Saldan this scene was a very emotional moment for the cast and crew of the film. She claims that there was not a single dry eye on set as everyone was touched by Groot’s unconditional spirit. Of course in Part 2 we were introduced to the adorable little Groot, but that in no way detracts from his self-sacrifice. The new Groot is a descendant of the old Groot, who is sadly gone forever. According to James Gunn Little Groot has no memories of the giant Groot.
‘The world didn’t shut down on you,’ Ancient One
While watching Doctor Strange, we were introduced to the mystical character known as the Ancient One. From the beginning, she was as poised as Stephen Strange and was also brash and arrogant. She lived an unimaginably long life and saw much pain and strife. During her battle with her protégé Kaecilius, it was discovered that she was able to prolong her life by drawing power from an insidious dark dimension. This discovery changed her friend Mordo’s attitude towards her forever.
Kaecilius managed to deliver the fatal blow and the Ancient One returned her astral form to save the last few moments of her life. She confesses to Strange that she doesn’t know if all her decisions were morally sound, but she always acted with the best of intentions. She had lived for thousands of years, but still felt fear at the thought of passing away. To see such an ancient and powerful being fear death was deeply moving. As she desperately tried to savour the last moments of her life, she had to come to terms with the idea that she had done everything she could to ensure a better future during her time on this planet.
‘I don’t want to die, I’m sorry,’ – Peter Parker
We said goodbye to far too many of our favourite characters during Infinity War. Surely no one has forgotten that moment when Thanos snapped his fingers and half of life in the universe disappeared. Watching some of our favourite characters fade into oblivion was heartbreaking though. But one of them had a striking impact on the audience. The relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark is one of our favourites in the CWM. It was quite touching to see Stark’s famously curmudgeonly nature take Parker under his wing.
It’s quite obvious that Peter wants to impress Stark and treats him like a father. At the beginning of Infinity War, Tony recalled a dream in which he imagined he had a son, even though Pepper assured him it was just a dream. But we think his dream may have been a manifestation of his paternal feelings for young Peter Parker. In the end, Tony was unable to protect the one he loved so much. In his final moments, Parker looked at him pleadingly for help, while Stark was left to sit back completely helpless. It was clear that Parker spent his last moments of life in absolute terror. It was horrible to watch, both for the audience and for Stark himself.
