The Best Movies to Watch on Netflix this Weekend

By Film Threat Staff | April 24, 2021

Let us begin by saying that Netflix is hands-down the best movie streaming platforms, and no other platform comes even close to it. Of course, we have a hoard of other streaming platforms like Hulu and Amazon Prime with unique features and original shows and movies that we would love to catch up on. But none of this is quite like Netflix. Every month, this streaming platform streams a few movies and shows that we absolutely love. It keeps adding to its astonishing volume and provides ample room for passionate movie buffs to keep themselves entertained. Now, amidst all that it streams on the platform, it could sometimes become difficult to choose the ones that must not go amiss. In fact, if you are just a beginner with no idea where to start, the sheer volume of movies on Netflix could be quite intimidating. Therefore, to make it easier for you and help you catch up on some of the gems on this streaming platform, we have come up with an article that rounds of a few movies. You can catch these movies on the weekend and bust your stress, and start your journey as a movie critic.

Brokeback Mountain

One of the finest representations of the spectrum that sexuality is, on-screen, Brokeback Mountain must make it to your weekend viewing list at once. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and the legendary Heath Ledger, who plays lovers to each other with utmost finesse. They fall in love, much against the societal norms of heteronormative relationships and therefore, bear the brunt of the same. Their love that comes at a price is far too ahead of the times, and therefore, these lovers must fight the constraints and impediments to steal a few moments together.

Spotlight

More often than not, robbed of its due credits, Spotlight is a movie that revolves around the ongoing crimes involving pedophilia and child abuse involving the Catholic church. The movie chronicles the journeys of a group of journalists from the Boston Globe who, very neatly, despite the challenges, uncovers the hideous pedophilia scandal of the Catholic church. Starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams, the movie delivers some of the best performances and a story that was based on true events.

Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems might appeal to only those who have a penchant for gambling or watching anything even remotely related to the same. The movie stars Adam Sandler in a smarmy, yet lovable role who delves deeper into the world of compulsive gambling in the hope of making money hands-over-fists. However, things have a way of going awry in the domain of gambling (unless, of course, you hover over the best sites to play at), and by the time he comes to the realization, it is too late for him. If you are interested in watching something besides fairytale romance, Uncut Gems might just do it for you!

Da 5 Bloods

Da 5 Bloods is a sequel to the Oscar-winning BlackKklansman and sees the story of four Black Vietnam War vets traveling back to their country. They set out on an adventure to find the body of their leader besides a treasure that is buried deep down somewhere inside the earth. Da 5 Blood is packed with the brilliant performance of DelroyLindo and saves the day as the must-needed response to the black heroes that Vietnam films had ignored for long.

Becoming

Who does not love Michelle Obama? Becoming, which is based on the autobiographical book by the same name by the Former First Lady Michelle Obama, is a Netflix original documentary that narrates the story of this iron lady from her childhood to the present. Becoming offers nothing but unfiltered truth on her life, the things she has seen and the challenges she has faced on her way to the White House, and stands as a testament to the spirit of womanhood. Despite being known as the First Lady, Michelle Obama had a name, fame and reputation of her own as she refused to live in the shadows of her much-supportive husband. Watch Becoming on Netflix to clear your palate that might have been overdosed with fiction by now.

These are some of the best movies that we thought you ought to watch over a weekend and lay your hair down a bit. All these streams on Netflix, and therefore, all you need is a basic Netflix plan to catch up with them. The movies that we have mentioned in the article are across genres and, therefore, might appeal to each one of you. Watch all of them or just one—the choice rests with you. However, missing out on these gems despite having a subscription might be a sacrilege that you did not ask for!
