How Do Hollywood Movies Affect the Image of Roulette?

By Film Threat Staff | May 14, 2019

Roulette is one of the most popular casino games in the world. As a result, we can often spot it in Hollywood movies, both in titles related to gambling and those pertaining to other genres. It seems that Hollywood and roulette have created an inseparable bond.

In this article, we’d like to take a closer look at this symbiosis and analyze how this Hollywood’s obsession with Roulette impacts the image of roulette in real life. Does it affect it positively or negatively? Is it making it more popular or pushing people away?

Hollywood Is Enchanted by Roulette

First of all, Hollywood movies are definitely bringing roulette closer to the general public. If it weren’t for them, the majority of people would not know what roulette is, what the table looks like, and how the game is played.

The American movie industry makes a lot of gambling-related titles every year. Some of them are exclusively about American roulette, but most of them will at least show this game in several scenes.

However, roulette does not only appear in gambling movies. We can even see it in comedies, thrillers, dramas, and even in some horrors. Therefore, no matter what the message of the movie is, Hollywood is definitely further popularizing this famous game.

Mixed Signals Seen in Movies

Now, let’s talk a little bit about the message conveyed by these Hollywood movies about roulette. Depending on the genre, plot, characters, and overall atmosphere, these messages can vary significantly.

In some movies, roulette is shown as a fun pastime that people engage in when on vacation, a bachelor night, or when they want to add some excitement to their lives. In others, roulette is part of a grim criminal system that will punish you if you get involved in it.

Gambling movies often follow a pattern that can be harmful for casino games in general, including roulette. The main character usually struggles with debt and addiction, trying to escape a mob boss whom he owns a lot of money. You’ll agree, that’s not very good for the reputation of roulette.

Charismatic Main Characters

One way in which the Hollywood industry impacts the image of roulette in a positive way is through the main characters. Namely, the main character in gambling movies is usually a young, good-looking male, who has great people skills and is very charismatic. Most often, he has a beautiful lady by his side who is always there to offer help and support. Even though he sometimes gets in trouble, a lot of people would like to be him.

Without a doubt, that encourages a lot of people to give a try to online roulette on Codere or other similar websites. Some of them might visit a real casino as well, but doing it online is faster and more convenient today.

Main characters in some of the most popular gambling movies made in Hollywood are played by celebrities such as George Clooney, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and so on.

Unrealistic Consecutive Wins

Hollywood is also known for spreading some myths about roulette. One of them is the unrealistic consecutive wins that are quite common in movies.

The main character usually first loses a lot of money and gets in a lot of trouble. When things seem as if they couldn’t be any worse, he starts getting lucky. He ends up on a winning spree, enlarging his balance after each round, often by betting on his lucky number.

Even though that’s a dream of every roulette player and casino goer, something like that that does not happen often in real life. You might get lucky a couple of times and win several rounds in a row, but not to that extent seen in the imaginative world of Hollywood.

Luck vs. Skill

Another reason why games such as roulette and slots are becoming more popular is that Hollywood shows them as games of skill and not games of luck. Skill does play a role in the game of roulette, but you also need a lot of luck. The same goes for slots.

This is another myth that can be seen in popular movies that inevitably attracts more people to both online and land-based casinos. It is definitely making games such as roulette more popular and more appealing to players.
