Your time is too precious to waste endlessly searching your favorite streaming sites for a movie to watch. We’ve done the legwork for you, so put your feet up, spark up some of your newly grown bud, queue up one of these classics, and enjoy the show.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

If you’re a sci-fi fan and want a weed movie to blow your mind, this is the film for you. Arguably Stanley Kubrick’s finest work, it’s undoubtedly his most influential. 2001 is a trippy, thoughtful, visual spectacle that looks as good today as it did in 1968.

That’s right; this masterpiece hit theaters a year before we landed on the moon. Indeed, it wasn’t until December 1968 that the Apollo 8 astronauts took the first complete photo of the Earth.

Despite not having any reference materials to work with, the special effects are uncannily realistic and still impress to this day. Effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull created the incredibly detailed miniatures and vistas in the movie.

As the name suggests, this movie takes place in 2001, when humanity has established a foothold in the heavens. The plot centers around the discovery of an ancient, black monolith buried on the moon.

With its understated performances and treacle-slow pace, this isn’t a movie everyone will love. However, if you’re a fan of visually impressive science fiction with a profound message, 2001 might be the best movie you’ve never seen.

2. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

Rob Reiner’s 1984 feature is among the first significant mockumentaries to achieve mainstream appeal. Starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer, Reiner’s debut charts the course of “England’s Loudest Band,” Spinal Tap.

Reiner extensively uses talking heads and “candid” backstage footage to paint a picture of the band and its members. This Is Spinal Tap showcases the absurdity and excess of the eighties rock and heavy metal scene.

The loose plot centers around the band’s American reunion tour but primarily serves as a vehicle for endless comedy. While the actors had basic outlines of their scenes, virtually all of the dialogue is improvised, which is quite remarkable.

What’s even more impressive is that the musical numbers in the movie were written and performed by the leading actors. Despite silly titles and sillier lyrics, the musicianship here is genuinely accomplished—one of the absolute best high movies.

Watch with friends, and you’ll be quoting and referencing this movie for years. For similar films, check out A Mighty Wind and Best In Show. These comedies were directed by Christopher Guest, who plays lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap.

3. Half Baked (1998)

Dave Chappelle’s recent return to prominence means there’s never been a better time to go back and check out this classic. Half Baked is one of the best 420 movies and an absolute riot from start to finish.

Despite tanking in theaters, Half Baked has amassed a cult stoner following over the years. The movie stars Chappelle as Thurgood, a weed-loving janitor who works in a cannabis research facility.

Within hours of this discovery, Thurgood “procures” a pound of Maui Wowie, which he takes home to share with his three best buds. Several bong hits later, and a routine snack run goes sideways when the soft-hearted Kenny accidentally kills a diabetic police horse.

With their friend locked up, the remaining trio takes to selling weed to raise the bail money for Kenny. What follows is a madcap stoner adventure packed with laughs and edgy nineties humor.

4. Pineapple Express (2008)

Talk about cannabis and cinema, and Seth Rogen’s name invariably pops up. His portrayal of an unambitious stoner dropout in Pineapple Express turned audiences onto Rogen’s comic genius.

The movie follows Dale, an easygoing process server, as he coasts through life in a cloud of pot smoke. Following a day of handing out court notices to unappreciative recipients, Dale takes a toke break and ends up witnessing a murder.

In a panic, Dale throws his roach out and tries to get out of the area unseen. Unfortunately, he crashes his car in the attempt, alerting the murderer to his presence. The discarded roach, packed with Pineapple Express, sets off a chain of events Dale won’t soon forget.

The remainder of the movie follows Dale and Saul, his goofy dealer (played by James Franco), evading the clutches of their pursuers. What follows is a hilarious blend of comedy, thriller, and buddy movie.

If you’re entertaining stoners, funny movies like Pineapple Express always go down well. Grab your favorite pipe, papers, or a DIY bong, and enjoy.

5. Inherent Vice (2014)

The last spot on this list was a tossup between Inherent Vice and The Big Lebowski. With The Dude appearing on many lists of stoner movies, it only seemed right to give this lesser-known movie some exposure.

Inherent Vice is a neo-noir stoner movie directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel of the same name. Joaquin Phoenix stars as “Doc” Sportello, a pothead private eye living in LA’s Manhattan Beach circa 1970.

After a request from an ex, Doc stumbles across a massive crime plot leaving him way out of his depth. Phoenix’s turn as the pot-addled Sportello is a joy to watch, and like many of his roles, he makes it his own.

With its low-key humor and purposefully complicated plot, Inherent Vice will have you both scratching your head and laughing out loud. Like The Big Lebowski, it’s very re-watchable and packed with details you probably won’t catch the first time around.

Cannabis and Cinema, a Perfect Combination

We hope this list of the best movies to watch while high gives you some ideas for your next movie night. More importantly, hopefully, you have a healthy stash of buds to accompany them. If not, the best way to solve this problem is by raising some quality cannabis seeds.

Jennifer Gallagher, an experienced cannabis grower at SeedSupreme Seedbank. During a 7-year career in the marijuana growing business, Jennifer has gained a high competence in this field. As far as weed is concerned, she knows it all inside out. Jennifer is an expert in pot-growing, as well as cannabis types and their effects. She’s also familiar with all legislation nuances.
