The superhero multiverses are no stranger to the world of gaming. Whether it be action, RPGs or slots, superheroes remain one of the most loved fantasies among the gaming industry. In honor of the late Stan Lee, a legend of Marvel Comics, we’re looking at five of the best superhero themed games from the past and the present.

1. Batman: The Video Game

What better way to start a list of classic superhero games than to travel back to 1989 when Sunsoft released Batman: The Video Game? The first of this game series was developed for Nintendo Entertainment Systems and Game Boy and is often looked back on as one of the more underrated games of its time. This retro game followed the Batman film directed by Tim Burton that same year and the combination of the two can be seen as the mainstream public’s start of the fascination with all things Gotham.

2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Entering into the Marvel universe and twenty-first century, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released in 2009 and was somewhat based off the film of the same name released earlier that year. The game was made for gaming consoles like PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and a PC version for Microsoft Windows. The film was eagerly awaited and accepted by fans around the world, automatically making the game a fan favorite.

3. The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

In 2005, game developer Radical Entertainment released The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles. Thanks to this game’s action-packed content it was not only a hit in the video game industry, but also saw spin-offs spread to the booming industry of physical and online slots, with the digital version by Cryptologic continuing to be played around the world today. All things considered, it is no wonder it is known to be the most popular Hulk game to date.

4. The Avengers

The Avengers has taken the entertainment industry by storm over the past decade, encompassing everything fans love about Marvel characters and their universe. Although 2012 was set to see the release of a Marvel Avengers video game, the cancellation thereof by no means eliminated its popularity. Many versions have been made since, including Lego adaptations. However, this superhero team is another to have made a name in the casino gaming industry, with Playtech’s The Avengers themed slots available at various online UK casinos, including Mr Green. For those who are still eagerly awaiting a game surrounding this superhero gang, development company Crystal Dynamics has a game set to be released for various gaming consoles and PC in the near future.

5. Spider-Man 2

The Spider-Man 2 video game makes for the perfect round-up of our list of superhero-themed games. This modern classic was released in 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo DS and GameCube by Activision and designed by Treyarch. Although it may seem outdated today thanks to newer versions having been released, it is undoubtedly a winner as it is known as one of the best superhero games ever made. In the end, regardless of what type of comic appreciation a player has, games will always be around to stimulate the mind and test cognitive agility. That is the test of true technological engagement.
