WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER “MAVERICK”…

By Michael Ferraro | May 1, 2007

Come to think of it, we didn’t need the first one either. The fine folks at Dark Horizons posted a news tidbit, by way of Hollywood.com, about the potential interest in reviving a franchise no one really cares about. The return of Maverick?

Does anyone even remember that movie? I am somewhat of a Richard Donner fan (especially the Shane Black scripted Lethal Weapon) and even I don’t remember that movie. And I know I’ve seen it before too. I worked at a certain video chain many years ago and rented it back when VHS was still dominate. That was only a mere 8 years ago and I still have no recollection of it.

Man, I so wish I could have drawn that in Paint…

Even looking at the stills does nothing for me. Though, I do seem to recall a brief moment in this film that involved Danny Glover. One minute of Danny Glover is simply not enough. His horrific performance in Shooter aside, I’ve always been a Danny Glover fan. Not sure why exactly but there is just something about him I can’t quite put my finger on. Watch Predator 2 and you’ll know what I am talking about.

Why isn’t there more franchises with Danny Glover? Dude could make anything good (again, except his performance in Shooter, which was downright embarrassing). Why wasn’t he in Aliens Vs. Predator? Lord of the Rings? He could kick some Hobbit a*s.

I liked the first Maverick a lot, but I don’t think there needs to be another one. Also, I loved Spider-Man 2, but I’m not really looking forward to Spider-Man 3.

  2. Professor Tom says:

I do have to agree with Dave. Maverick did have a good shelf life and made its moeny. I remember it because it was funny and I saw it as a kid.

You do have a point with the Spiderman movies.

  3. Michael Ferraro says:

I barely remember the first Spider-man film too, outside of the terrible dialogue and awful effects of course.

  4. Dave Lawler says:

Therein lies the problem of overextended budgets in movies; producers believe the product has the capacity to be timeless so they run up huge operating costs. “Maverick” was a fairly big budget movie, starring A-listers, was a big B.O. success and a good video shelf life and still Ferraro barely remembers it.

Will “Spiderman 3” be forgotten or barely remembered after a little over ten years?

  5. Felix Vasquez Jr. says:

    I’m one who loves Maverick.

And Danny Glover’s performance in “Saw” was embarrassing.

  6. Michael Ferraro says:

Oh YES! Saw, I knew there was another awful one I couldn’t remember. Shooter was just fresh on my mind at the time.

  7. Professor Tom says:

I have fond memories of that movie. It was rather funny if not trite in parts. It depends on the mood of the day if I decide to rate it a 4 or a 6.
