STARSKY & HUTCH

By Eric Campos | March 8, 2004

How could this have happened? You’d figure a movie directed by Todd Phillips, starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Snoop Dogg, spoofing a cheeseball 70s cop show would be a deadlock for a good time, right? That’s what I thought anyway. Fast forward fifteen minutes into the movie and I’m starting to get a little worried that I haven’t laughed once, barely even cracked a smirk. And then the test. The scene featuring Will Ferrell as a perverted convict with a thing for belly buttons and dragons limps across the screen. If this scene isn’t funny the game is over.

Game over, man.

Giving up on the whole idea that this movie is actually going to be funny, I started thinking that maybe Phillips and crew actually went ahead and tried to make a real episode of “Starsky and Hutch.” For a little while this seemed like it could be true. All of the terrible ingredients are there, but in the end, this movie doesn’t even deserve to stand next to the crummiest of “Starsky and Hutch” TV episodes. This makes the movie version of “Dragnet” look like a stroke of genius.

There really is nothing here to speak positively about. Not even the teaming of Wilson and Stiller can save this one. Actually, I think they’re the main problem. The chemistry between the two…well, there is no chemistry. There’s nothing at all. There isn’t even the overload of T&A normally found in a Todd Phillips production. What the f**k? So be forewarned. Don’t be a sucker like me. Don’t shake hands with danger. This tired old pile of garbage will hopefully be chased out of town soon.
