SPIRIT AWARDS OVERSHADOWED BY QUESTIONS ABOUT FILM INDEPENDENT’S NONPROFIT STATUS

Just in time for the annual Spirit Awards, the “Los Angeles Times” has posted a rather scathing report and breakdown of Spirit Award presenter Film Independent’s “nonprofit” outfit, pointing out, among other things, executive director Dawn Hudson’s $265,000 annual salary, a questionable re-classification of tax returns and stating that, “Barely half of Film Independent’s budget went to workshops, laboratories and other charitable services that directly benefit struggling auteurs. Its two single largest expenses were the June film festival and the Spirit Awards, its principal fundraiser.”
