Phil (Nickerson) is a rebound guy. He has a knack for picking up girls right after a breakup, and it’s killing his love life. Brooke (Thompson) is in need of a rebound guy. Her ex-boyfriend (Pitts) wants her to rebound with his buddy Phil because he knows the relationship will be over as quickly as it started. But something about Brooke makes Phil open up. Phil realizes that he is still rebounding from a college relationship. His vulnerability drives Brooke crazy, but Phil refuses to have sex with her. He is determined to break the rebound cycle.
The acting is great. Greg Pitts, best known for a small role in Office Space, really steals his scenes with his wisecracking delivery. Lindsay Thompson is sexy in an unconventional, girl-next-door-not-quite-gone-bad-yet way. Shane Nickerson is a credible lead, playing the straight man to his own jokes and never overplaying.
You have to hand it to writer/director Mark Goffman, though. The best thing about “Rebound Guy” is the writing. The characterizations are compelling, and the idea is high concept enough to get financing as a feature length romantic comedy.
