“Opus” is a fascinating short film that examines the art of creation in every shape and form, be it the minimal swirls of creamer in coffee to a morbid rising mushroom cloud, director Mary Helena Clark’s experimental film is visionary and ambitious examining the process of creation, and the construction of the atom bomb. With stark photography, and a gorgeous air balloon sequence, “Opus” examines and somewhat challenges the utter short-sight of Robert Oppenheimer and his contribution to the creation of the atom bomb which led to insurmountable destruction. Clark juxtaposes both giving new life and destruction, displaying the gradual creation of a child, and the creator’s ultimate power for forming new life, and destroying it.
