HOW TO GET A HEAD AT SUNDANCE

By Brian Bertoldo | September 27, 1999

A Barbie-style doll braves the madness of the Sundance Film Festival while her film enters competition. Director Abner Zurd uses wires to control the doll as she wanders the streets and parties of Park City in search of her missing head. Along the way she encounters various others who are looking for a different kind of “head.”
Our doll, Sweetie James, comes to Park City to support her film, which is in competition at the Sundance Festival. Upon being picked up at the airport, her head is accidentally chopped off in the door of a courtesy van. Sweetie spends he majority of her time wandering the streets, putting up signs and stickers reading “Got Head?”. Through her travels, she runs into various insane, self-absorbed filmmakers and h***y agents. Most of whom are looking for head themselves, admiring Sweetie’s breasts, until they find of course that she has no actual head.
Truly a telling tale, “How to Get A Head at Sundance” sheds light on the whole film festival scene, especially the now ultra-commercialized Sundance. As Sweetie gets kicked about while looking for her head, we get a sense of what these festivals are like, especially for female filmmakers. In the end it’s the “job” done by her head alone that “wins over” the judges and not the efforts of the body that succeed at Sundance.
