FILM THREAT’S 2007 ACADEMY AWARDS PREDICTIONS (PART 2)

By Mark Bell | February 20, 2007

Can’t slow down now, not if we want to get these predictions within the alloted time for this feature…

In the category of Best Animated Feature Film, the nominees are:
Cars
Happy Feet
Monster House

And Film Threat predicts…
Monster House: Even though Happy Feet made the most money and had an out-of-leftfield eco-message, we’re banking on the fact that the majority of the Academy voters do not actually venture out of their homes to see the movies, thus the box office and theatrical goings-on are not important and, therefore, Monster House, being the best out of the group, will win.

In the category of Art Direction, the nominees are:
Dreamgirls
The Good Shepherd
Pan’s Labyrinth
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
The Prestige

And Film Threat predicts…
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: This was a hard category, because the majority of the films could win it. We’re going with PotC:DMC mainly because of the large-scale of environments it had to come up with… and the sword-fight in the wheel was awesome.

In the category of Cinematography, the nominees are:
The Black Dahlia
Children of Men
The Illusionist
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Prestige

And Film Threat predicts…
Children of Men: No other film comes close. There are specifically two single-shot sequences that should be seen by everyone on the face of the Earth, they’re so spectacular.

In the category of Sound Mixing, the nominees are:
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Dreamgirls
Flags of Our Fathers
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

And Film Threat predicts…
Dreamgirls: “Party All the Time” rocked, but Eddie Murphy can’t sing. Any film that makes him remotely palatable deserves some kind of an award.

In the category of Sound Editing, the nominees are:
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters From Iwo Jima
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

And Film Threat predicts…
Flags of Our Fathers: Sound editing is a war movie category, and it could really go to either of Clint Eastwood’s entries.

In the category of Original Score, the nominees are:
Babel, Gustavo Santaolalla
The Good German, Thomas Newman
Notes on a Scandal, Philip Glass
Pan’s Labyrinth, Javier Navarrete
The Queen, Alexandre Desplat

And Film Threat predicts…
Notes on a Scandal, Philip Glass: Glass has been nominated twice before without a win (and both of those scores were better), so consider this a payback win from the Academy, something they tend to do for everyone but Scorsese.

In the category of Original Song, the nominees are:
“I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth, Melissa Etheridge
“Listen” from Dreamgirls, Henry Krieger, Scott Cutler and Anne Preven
“Love You I Do” from Dreamgirls, Henry Krieger and Siedah Garrett
“Our Town” from Cars, Randy Newman
“Patience” from Dreamgirls, Henry Krieger and Willie Reale

And Film Threat predicts…
“Love You I Do” from Dreamgirls, Henry Krieger and Siedah Garrett: If the Academy is like us in any way, they probably lumped the Dreamgirls songs together and then compared the remaining before finally sighing and giving the Oscar to “Love You I Do” anyway.

In the category of Costume, the nominees are:
Curse of the Golden Flower
The Devil Wears Prada
Dreamgirls
Marie Antoinette
The Queen

And Film Threat predicts…
Curse of the Golden Flower: Wins because of the elaborate period-piece setting, though if it gets upset it’s because everyone is retarded for Prada.

In the category of Visual Effects, the nominees are:
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Poseidon
Superman Returns

And Film Threat predicts…
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: Wow, visual effects weren’t so hot this year, were they? Easily goes to PotC:DMC for Davey Jones squid-face, his many CGI-henchmen, the Kraken…

In the category of Documentary Feature, the nominees are:
Deliver Us From Evil
An Inconvenient Truth
Iraq in Fragments
Jesus Camp
My Country, My Country

And Film Threat predicts…
Iraq in Fragments: Leaning towards An Inconvenient Truth, but with the state of things in Iraq, and the passive-aggressive way in which the arts makes their opinions known sometimes, Iraq in Fragments is the more timely vote.
