FERNANDO MEIRELLES: CITY ON FIRE Image

Fast, furious and ultra-violent, “City of God,” Fernando Meirelles’ tale of two boys growing up in a seedy neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, is said to have the same gritty feel of Amores Perros and even “Goodfellas.” And, like Boogie Nights, the film takes place over a longs stretch of time, in this case ten years as one boy turns to photography and the other one turns to dealing drugs. Yes, there are quite a few comparisons drawn between this movie and others, but talk to most anyone that has seen “City of God” and they’ll tell you of an amazing moviegoing experience.
