DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS: FILM THREAT AT THE 2007 SXSW FILM FESTIVAL

By Admin | March 6, 2007

The useless awards season is over, Winter is in its final days, so it must be time for Film Threat’s annual trip to Austin, TX for the SXSW Film Festival. Find out who’ll be in town, and where to find them below.

Mark Bell – Film Threat’s Editor-in-Chief has a fondness for the Alamo Drafthouse, Woodchuck Cider and lunch at Iron Works.

Merle Bertrand – Austin-ite and Film Threat’er Merle Bertrand will be contributing reviews and other coverage as the festival rolls on. He’s also the one who knows his way around town the best, which is why he’s seldom seen with Don and Mark, who tend to get lost often.

Sally Foster – Film reviewer extraordinaire Sally Foster is double-dipping at the 2007 SXSW Film Festival as both a Film Threat reporter AND a selected filmmaker. Her short film, “A Sim-ple Romance,” will be playing prior to the feature “The King of Kong,” so show the Film Threat love, and support Sally.

Chris Gore – FT founder Chris Gore will be doing his usual “Attack of the Show” gig for G4, but, like Sally above him, he’s also double-dipping with the short “A Sim-ple Romance.” The multi-talented Gore co-stars in the short film, so if you’ve ever wanted to see if TV’s Chris Gore can also act, then make your way to the screening.

Don R. Lewis – Contributing editor and a filmmaker in his own right, Don Lewis will be making his way to Austin from Petaluma, CA for the love and fun. He does not appear in “A Sim-ple Romance” though, so we’ll stop talking about it now.

Pete Vonder Haar – Texas denizen and contributing editor Vonder Haar will be taking a small break from the weekly mainstream theatrical fare he’s so skilled at critically dissecting to focus on the more indie fare found at SXSW.

FILM THREAT, RED BULL AND SUICIDE GIRLS PARTY EXTRAVAGANZA!
Sunday, 3/11, around 7pm, Film Threat, along with Red Bull and the Suicide Girls, will be a having a good, rocking party. The whole FT gang will be in attendance, so clear some space in your busy schedule for this soirée and rock the night away! Want more details? Wait until SXSW gets going, and ask the FT team in person.

DAILY REVIEWS, INTERVIEWS AND FESTIVAL NEWS!
Film Threat will be all over Austin, covering SXSW with all the vigor and insanity we’re famous for, starting this Friday, March 9th and rolling all the way through the end of the festival (and beyond). Check in daily for new reviews, exclusive interviews and any pertinent festival news.

SXSW FILM TRAILERS AND VIDEO COVERAGE!
Check the site and iTunes podcast for daily video reports from the Film Threat’ers, trailers for the various films playing SXSW and even more exclusive, on-camera interviews with filmmakers and cast. Last year we talked to the filmmakers behind “Forgiving the Franklins,” “Maxed Out,” “Slam Planet” and even 1/2 of the Pixies while also having more trailers than you could shake a stick at (if shaking a stick at trailers is you thing). This year will be no different.

BLOGGING FROM THE FESTIVAL!
Sick of us yet? No? Good, because we’ll also be blogging the Hell out of the festival as well over at the Film Threat Blogs, letting you know the more candid feelings that we may leave out of our more “professional” coverage. If you want to know whether Pete, Don and Mark spent the festival playing nightly rounds of Naked Robber in the hotel room, this would be the place to check. Check out last year’s blog for an idea of what you’ll be in for.

PANELS AND OTHER NONSENSE!
Gore will be on a panel on Monday, 3/12, on User-Generated Video, and he’ll also be doing a mentor session on online and film journalism on Sunday, 3/11. The latter you’ll have to sign up for, so make sure you get to the sheet early, as Gore tends to be pretty popular.

The rest of us? We’ll be easy to find, just stick to the theaters and you’re bound to run into one of us. Beyond the theaters, we’ll be abusing the usual hospitality and BBQ found in Austin, TX (Iron Works, anyone), so just keep your eyes out. Film Threat and SXSW, a beautiful relationship, consummated annually…

– Mark Bell, Editor-in-BBQ Sauce
