Classic noir staples get a tremendous visual lift in Darcy Van Poelgeest’s short film Corvus. As a detective (Ian Tracey) follows the trail of a crime, we witness the final flight of our imperiled heroine (Sara Canning) as she is hunted down by a mysterious assailant (Matthew MacCaull). It’s a simple tale, with a slight twist, that is entirely elevated by its accomplished presentation.
This short film is visually stunning, and pulls out all the tricks it can. This is the type of gorgeous imagery we’ve come to expect from the best moments of a Zack Snyder film, speed changes and all, brought into the world of a classic noir tale. Much like von Trier’s AntiChrist, there are shots in this film that, if you captured, framed and hung them on a wall, they would be as striking as any other piece of art.
The narrative hints at a larger story, and if so, I truly want more. While this part of tale is finished, there’s a mystery left open about our murderous criminal, and I am more than a little intrigued. Corvus delivers a spectacular visual experience, and reignites a classic genre.
