All five 2014 Best Documentary Oscar nominees join BYOD to discuss their films and the lessons learned from making some of the best docs of the year. The Act Of Killing, The Square, Cutie and the Boxer, Dirty Wars, and Twenty Feet From Stardom are all shared by their brilliant directors in a very special roundtable that brings the most noteworthy directors together to follow up on their previous appearances on the world’s only talk show about documentary film…

BYOD is hosted by Ondi Timoner, director of “DIG!,” “JOIN US” and “WE LIVE IN PUBLIC,” and has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice. GUEST BIO:
The exhilarating ode to back-up singers, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, juxtaposes interviews with industry legends (Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, and others) and the relative unknowns who support them like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill as they illuminate the art of melding their own distinct voices with lead vocals and reveal their desires for careers as solo artists. Filmmaker Morgan Neville’s unprecedented look at the moving personal journeys of these normally uncelebrated artists pays tribute to their indelible role in popular music.

THE ACT OF KILLING director Joshua Oppenheimer has worked for over a decade with militias, death squads and their victims to explore the relationship between political violence and the public imagination. The film recreates the Indonesian political genocide of the 1960’s with the perpetrators of the crimes–who continue to sit in positions of influence in their country.

Director Richard Rowley takes us on a chilling ride with fearless whistle-blower Scahill. Dirty Wars is a battle cry for the soul and conscience of an America few of us know exists.

Big Noise Films co-founder Richard Rowley has made multiple award-winning documentary features, including The Fourth World War and This Is What Democracy Looks Like.

THE SQUARE, depicting the revolution in Egypt’s famous Tahrir Square, follows the experience of activists and players in the highly combustible eye of the Arab spring. Jehane Noujaim (CONTROL ROOM) brings the revolution to our screens.

Zachary Heinzerling is a director and cinematographer based in Brooklyn, NY. He was the recipient of the Directing award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival for his feature film debut, CUTIE AND THE BOXER.
