BLACK WATER

By David Finkelstein | February 21, 2005

This black and white video begins with stylized, digitally altered images of water. Glints of light twinkle like stars on the moving grey-and-black background of wavelets. A watery sound of toy piano music accompanies the image. Other, romantic images fade in and out of the water: a blurry, negative image of couples waltzing (accompanied by old fashioned waltz music) as well as the seductive mouth of a woman.

“Black Water” presents a standard image of the unconscious mind as water, with memories periodically surfacing from the chaos. However, the lovely visual values, beautifully executed, plus the sensitive musicality of the piece, create an enjoyably haunting and romantic effect.
