AFRO DEUTSCH

By Merle Bertrand | February 6, 2002

What must it be like to live your life in fear simply because of the color of your skin? Sadly, this is still a problem in today’s world, as director Ayassi vividly demonstrates with his biting short film “Afro Deutsch.” Combining a simple narrative with elements of a long form German rap music video, “Afro Deutsch” consists of nothing more than a young African-American man fleeing from a pack of toughs and skinheads, only to face them down by film’s end. Ayassi juxtaposes this simple chase with a chilling assortment of disturbing images to create a haunting urban ode. “Afro Deutsch” seethes with a barely restrained, yet plaintive rage that manages to invoke vaguely nauseating yet bewildering feelings of guilt and anger about our cruelty to our fellow man.
