The complexity Spielberg and Kushner introduce into the narrative of The Fabelmans through that speech spread throughout the remainder of the picture. It is sewn into the fabric of the performances. Zoryan and LaBelle are outstanding as the lead character of the movie at two different ages. They bring nuance to the role while believably reacting to complex situations.

Williams’ work stands up and screams for an Oscar. Mitzi is three-dimensional, even without the special glasses. She excels with mastery, whereas others would have just let the pixie haircut do all the work. Dano is the perfect picture of repressed emotions. The subtlety with which he locks himself inside while being Mr. Wizard on the outside is impressive. Rogen uses his comic talents and likeability to interesting ends as Benny. Hirsch has a pivotal role, and, no surprise, he’s wonderful.

Not since the shark in Jaws has Spielberg utilized a special effect as amazing as fellow director Lynch.”

As the film draws to a close, there is a monster waiting named David Lynch. Not since the shark in Jaws has Spielberg utilized a special effect as amazing as fellow director Lynch. Lynch’s trademark shouting and bizarre repetition of action is used to great ends here. By casting the filmmaker in a role described within the movie as “the greatest film director ever,” Spielberg accesses the reverence Lynch carries with many cinephiles. It’s a laugh riot right where it needs to be. It is Spielberg’s most satisfying climax since his fabulous melting Nazis.

The Fabelmans will take your expectations of the Spielberg brand and tie them to a rocket. It is engaging and compelling. I am still pondering it days later. If you love movies, you owe it to yourself to catch this on that same big screen that Sammy loves so much.
