Something Round

We go to a therapist for help, but who’s there when your therapist needs help? In writer-director Nikhail Asnani’s short film, Something Round, actor Freckle plays hypnotherapist Lena who receives a call from a former love, Lindsay (Erica Dasher). Lindsay informs her that she’s about to be married. Visibly shaken, Lena heads home to her uncaring roommate, Katie (Sandra Seeling), who unwittingly removes small tokens of Lena’s memories of Lindsay, like repainting the walls of an apartment.

Soon, the 17-minute fantasy takes a surrealistic turn. As Lena steadily loses control of her life, she holds on to that one thing that gives her comfort and security. What is it? That night, while looking out her back window, Lena reaches out and grabs the moon, as in literally plucks it from the sky. But, while the moon gives Lena stability, the rest of the world goes out of sync in its absence.

“…hypnotherapist Lena receives a call from a former love, Lindsay…she is about to be married.”

I’ve had a chance to review several of Asnani’s short films recently, and his stories often reflect the struggles of trying to live a “normal” or “sane” life, however you define it. Something Round is no different. The filmmaker captures that feeling of isolation as the world around us falls apart.

Something Round comes out of Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film & Media Arts. It’s an excellent place for young filmmakers to hone their craft. With access to high-end equipment, the short looks clean, crisp, and professional. While it is a weird little story, it shines in the end.

Something Round is available on Rervy.
