Scales

What do you get when you put four unpredictable people in a room discussing drug deals? You’re probably not quite sure, but the one thing you do know is that it is going to be tense. That’s the case for the film Scales, from writer Joe Harvey and director Nathan Hannawin, except the duo of Harvey and Hannawin know exactly what they are doing with this type of story and create a very successful film.

“As the night goes on, they all find out that there is a whole lot more going on than just a drug deal, there’s been a homicide.”

Scales takes four unpredictable characters, Darnell (Anthony Vander), a boxer, the boxer’s manager and current girlfriend, Maria (Nicola Roffe), Adam, a struggling entrepreneur (Kane Surry), and a drug dealer, Keith (Kamal Simpson), and sticks them into an apartment together. Maria, Darnell, and Adam think they are invited by Keith to discuss a drug deal. As the night goes on, they all find out that there is a whole lot more going on than just a drug deal, there’s been a homicide.

The film does a great job of building up the intensity scene by scene with adding just about every real problem that you can think of. There are the drugs, a boxer who is already going into the situation on volume eleven, old relationships come to light, oh…and the dead body in the closet.
