Royal: A Journey of Faith, Music, and Purpose profiles Christian singer and filmmaker Omar Cook as he, at 33, is on the verge of releasing his debut album, Royal. It is with this album and documentary that Cook reflects on what God has done in his life and career.
Up until this point, Cook was a true multi-hyphenate: professional athlete, corporate entertainer, and community advocate. Starting his illustrious career as a football player at Southern University and then a four-season defensive back in the Indoor Football League, Cook successfully channeled his athletic prowess into Hollywood stunt acting, contributing to seven editions of EA Sports’ Madden NFL franchise and appearing in over 40 episodes of major television productions like All American and Ballers.
Taking the opportunities God had given him, Cook stepped behind the camera as an independent filmmaker, founding 247 Live Culture and serving as its CEO. With all this success in sports and acting, music would unexpectedly emerge from behind and drastically alter Omar Cook’s path. It’s here Cook brings us into his world, beginning with his debut project — an isolated bedroom artist evolving into an empowered musical force.
His first single, “10K Week,” was the first sign that he was walking down the path God had laid for him. This led to his four-track debut EP, Destined for Greatness, which he recorded in a mere two days using only a basic podcast microphone — which brings us to this current 21-track follow-up album, Royal.
“His first single, ’10K Week,’ was the first sign that he was walking down the path God had laid for him.”
Royal: A Journey of Faith, Music, and Purpose is a fairly simple documentary that features Omar Cook front and center telling his story, interspliced with live, public performances of his rap songs. He walks us through his spiritual journey as Cook’s testimony explores the profound intersection of faith, authentic trauma, and structural community advocacy. His music often reflects the struggles he faces as an artist. “Questions” is about the financial anxieties he experiences after giving up security to follow God.
Cook sees his artistry as a therapeutic channel of spiritual alignment — treating the recording process as an explicit, step-by-step co-creation with God. Ultimately, the documentary captures a mature, midlife professional who uses his hard-earned wisdom to build an authentic legacy, offering a powerful blueprint for self-empowerment that urges audiences to claim their own metaphorical crowns.
As a documentary, Royal is pretty no frills. Cook takes this opportunity to share from his heart and document where God has brought him to this point. It’s pretty much a talking-head interview with handpicked performances. In other words, Cook allows the message to speak for itself. His story is truly inspiring, but I would have liked to see the film include interviews with others and more archival footage, if available.
Ultimately, Royal: A Journey of Faith, Music, and Purpose succeeds as a deeply earnest testimony to Omar Cook’s inspiring message of resilience and faith. It’s a powerfully intimate portrait of a modern artist pursuing his true calling — and whether or not you share his beliefs, the conviction he brings to it is hard to argue with.
