Peaking: Psychedelics and the Pursuit of Happiness

The cultural history makes this debate even more interesting. Steppenwolf’s song Don’t Step on the Grass, Sam captured the distrust surrounding America’s drug laws with biting irreverence. Its refrain about the supposed threat to the country evokes the language of moral panic: the insistence that forbidden substances will corrupt society and destroy its future. Host Art Linkletter once remarked after the tragic death of his daughter Diane, “Anybody who has said anything which would encourage my daughter to take LSD was unwittingly a part of being her murderer.’

Ken Kesey, the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Sometimes a Great Notion, is mentioned, but groundbreaker and “scourge’ of conservative America, Dr. Timothy O. Leary, is. Both reflect a distinctly American tradition of rebellion against conformity, authority, and the suffocating machinery of respectable society.

Led by academic Robin Carhart-Harris, Peaking also examines psilocybin, ayahuasca, LSD, MDMA, ibogaine, and Bufo across different settings. Its ambition is admirable, although the range of substances means that some questions cannot receive the depth they deserve. Their effects, risks, and potential applications differ considerably. Personal testimony can open the conversation, but rigorous trials, appropriate clinical supervision, and long-term follow-up must determine which treatments genuinely work. Several people have treatment through various means, showing the benefits of controlled experience and supervised use in a strict setting. Veterans, young and old, suffering from PTSD, screaming “Thank You’ to the sky or walking smiling, free of headaches, laughing for the first time in years.

A man cries out in raw emotion beside a firelit ceremony in Peaking: Psychedelics and the Pursuit of Happiness.

“Led by academic Robin Carhart-Harris, Peaking also examines psilocybin, ayahuasca, LSD, MDMA, ibogaine, and Bufo across different settings.”

The centre piece for is reference to the October 7 2023, the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian nationalist and Islamist political organization Hamas, initiated a sudden attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip. At the Nova music festival. This was a rave event where many took their substance of choice to “peak’ when the sun rose. This is when the attacks began with missiles.

It is speculated that people who took either MDMA or other substances survived better because the drug acted as one put it, a ‘protector. One person who was a DJ says on camera that he and others were able to run for hours; even when death was all around them, it did not register. The drugs enable people to work through trauma as the attack was happening.

It is also important to understand that the film does not romanticize the use of these substances, nor does it say that all these treatments will work for all people.

Peaking: Psychedelics and the Pursuit of Happiness is a timely and provocative documentary whose greatest value lies in forcing an overdue confrontation between drug prohibition and the pursuit of medical knowledge. It asks us to look beyond the familiar language of criminality and consider the people who might benefit from research that has struggled for decades to emerge from the shadows.

The film does not establish that psychedelics are a universal answer to human suffering. It makes a more important case: that potential treatments should be investigated rigorously rather than dismissed through inherited prejudice. If America wishes to protect its citizens, it must consider not only the risks of allowing research and access, but also the costs of preventing them. On that question, the audience has a challenge that extends well beyond the screen: when does the war on drugs become an obstacle to the very public welfare it claims to defend?
