Plus, thanks to the intelligent writing and believable dialogue, none of this comes across as an exposition dump. Though the message of doing the right thing, even if it goes against the mission, or what your nation’s top officials say is maybe hammered home a little too hard. But all the characters are realistic and engaging. Carter’s love of people and his country shines through each scene. Ross believes this is a job, and nothing else matters, not even POWs. Their conflicting rationales make for a compelling duo, who do work well together, despite these differences.

The cast of Nightfire is also quite commendable. Pisoni is an affable lead, handling the action and drama equally as well. As the more stoic, slightly detached agent, Hadley’s confidence helps the audience understand his character pretty quickly. But, this is Baker’s show through and through. Perhaps best known for his role in the second third of the Sami Rami Spider-Man trilogy or Trick ‘R Trick, Baker has been steadily acting for some thirty years. If you haven’t seen his turn in the criminally underrated Fido, I implore you to do so; thank me later.

“…one of the best performances Baker has ever given.”

So, please believe me when I say that Nightfire is one of the best performances Baker has ever given. He is pitiful, humble, good-natured, scary, dangerous, and maybe even a little mad. Well, until your heart begins breaking for the man. He conveys all of this in just a few scenes closer to the end of the film. The man pulls it off perfectly, so the viewer is never confused by Olivetti’s intentions or actions. It is a spellbinding performance that deserves to be seen.

If the rest of Nightfire were a poorly plotted, confusing slog of a mess, the movie would still be worth it just for Baker’s performance alone. But, Benetton and Silva have written an intelligent and engaging framework for a swiftly paced and intense action film. The lighting, the editing, and especially the score all add greatly to the film’s intensity. This is one ride you do not want to miss.
