Every five years, it seems Disney cycles through tried and true stories and plotlines designed to appeal to the next generation of viewers. So this is a story written for the young teens of 2011 and featured teen stars of that time, most notably Adam Hicks and Bridget Mendler. The boon of American Idol and other music competition shows offers the perfect setting for this kind of feature at the time.
Storywise nothing is new, starting with High School Musical and even Descendants. It’s all-new dressing on the classic stories of friendship, teamwork, being there for one another, living your true self, and themes of speaking out/making your voice heard. What I think Lemonade Mouth does that’s different is giving its story some edge with the band’s protest music, only to have Disney severely round that off, playing it safe in the end.
As much as I’ve been criticizing and moaning over the state of Disney Channel films, I found myself enjoying Lemonade Mouth. It’s hard not to be cynical during the opening moments. Clearly, we’re making Disney’s version of The Breakfast Club, and how the hell does everyone know the music and lyrics to a song made up on the spot?
“…the songs are pretty catchy and performed marvelously…”
But, two things work very well here. First, many narratives are being told, and director Patricia Riggens moves through them quickly. She leaves the essential parts of the story and emotion, never lingering on it long enough to fall into the sappy category. Then, before the film has a chance to be stupid, she quickly moves on to the next bit.
Secondly, the songs are pretty catchy and performed marvelously by the cast. I know I’ve heard these songs before. Mendler is already a great singer, and we know Naomi Scott can sing thanks to Aladdin. I’m pretty sure this was Disney’s attempt to make their version of the Monkees.
My only real complaint is the Cinderella ending. Principal Brenigan makes a major one-eighty, and I don’t know why. Plus, the final tune is a huge misstep. I don’t know that the band needed an entire crew of dancers and the song is really blah. Other than that, for a Disney Channel original, you’ll have fun with Lemonade Mouth, and you could definitely do a lot worse.
