PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORTFEST 2026 REVIEW! Freedom of speech is what makes America the land of the free and home of the brave. When pop artist Nezza (Vanessa Hernandez) first received a coveted invitation to sing the National Anthem at Dodgers Stadium, little did she know that she would be making a political statement.

Cristina Costantini’s powerful short film documentary La Tierra de Valor (The Home of the Brave) showcases what taking a stand is like amid the modern political hotbed that we live in. The Latino community is the latest in a long line of races throughout history to be scapegoated as the “other” or the problem with society, due to illegal immigration. The film does a fantastic job in a short time of showing the shocking images of mistreatment by ICE, while displaying the strong character of Nezza’s parents.

“…pop artist Nezza…making a political statement.”

Nezza watched her parents and community work hard to give her generation a better life, only to be treated like animals or criminals by ICE (with the film adding that the vast majority who have been arrested, imprisoned, and deported are not criminals). She decided in an act of defiance that she would sing the National Anthem in Spanish at Dodger Stadium on the same day of the humongous nationwide No King’s Day protests. Moments before, the Dodgers’ PR people told her to sing it in English. Nezza had a tough choice but decided to stay with her conviction and do it in Spanish.

Overnight, she was hated by one side of the political spectrum and beloved by the other. She even appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! All of us will have our moments when we have a choice to take a stand for what we believe in; kudos to both the filmmakers and Nezza for taking theirs.

La Tierra del Valor screened at the 2026 Palm Springs International Shortfest.
