2026 Palm Springs ShortFest: The Largest Short Film Festival in North America Returns With Star-Studded Lineup

By Film Threat Staff | June 3, 2026

The Palm Springs International ShortFest has announced the full lineup for its 32nd edition, and the numbers alone tell the story of just how big short-form cinema has gotten. Running June 23–29, 2026, at the Festival Theaters in Palm Springs, CA, the festival will screen 329 films from 71 countries and territories across 50 curated programs — selected from a record submission pool of more than 7,000 short films submitted from 145 countries.

The slate includes 52 World Premieres, 21 International Premieres, 40 North American Premieres, 30 U.S. Premieres, and 79 California Premieres. Tickets go on sale June 4 at psfilmfest.org.

Artistic Director Lili Rodriguez made clear this is not a festival content to play it safe. “ShortFest is a lot of things, and one of the best parts is discovering filmmakers we’ll be obsessed with,” she said. “This year’s lineup is funny, strange, emotional, political, chaotic, gorgeous — everything short films should be. We’re thrilled to bring these filmmakers and stories to Palm Springs.”

Festival Chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi echoed the sentiment with an eye toward what the festival means for the broader community. “The Palm Springs International ShortFest has long been a place where the world’s most exciting new voices come to be discovered, and this year’s lineup is a testament to that tradition,” he said. “Through programs like our Curator Fellowship, Filmmaker Bootcamp, and Forum, we are proud to bring that global conversation home to our Coachella Valley students and desert community.”

Directors of Programming Jesse Knight and Céline Roustan, who led the curation alongside the ShortFest team, described what guided their selections: “The most invigorating work in filmmaking continues to be in the short form. Building the lineup from a record number of submissions was no easy feat, but ultimately we were drawn to what excites us both about short films: daring, uncompromising, free, and compelling narratives and visions.”

Among the most buzzworthy titles are several featuring well-known film and TV talent. Chop Cheese is directed by Sophia Meloni and stars her father, Christopher Meloni, alongside Michael Gandolfini. Patton Oswalt stars in Going Home, which is co-written and co-directed by comedian Alyssa Limperis. Nina Dobrev, Cedric Yarbrough, and Adam Shapiro appear in General Admission. Other notable cast members include Alan C*****g in Kiloran Bay, Melissa Joan Hart in Following, Jim Cummings and Justin Simien in Stay for the Q&A, and Jena Malone in Sylvia, written and directed by Jessie Barr. Why I Am an Anarchist stars Matilda Lawler and Izaac Wang, while WHALE 52 – Suite for Man, Boy, and Whale features the voice of Bruce Vilanch.

The festival’s international reach is formidable. Beyond 145 U.S. shorts, the top represented countries include Canada (29 films), France (27), the United Kingdom (24), Germany (17), and Spain (13). Notably, 136 of the 329 films — 41% — are directed by women, as reported by the filmmakers themselves.

ShortFest carries real Oscar weight. With more than 100 alumni films earning Academy Award nominations over its history, the festival offers five Oscar-qualifying award categories, with juried winners announced Sunday, June 28. Cash prizes total $30,000, sponsored by Bennett Awards. The Best of the Fest program, showcasing the top award-winning shorts, closes out the festival on Monday, June 29. Award categories span Oscar-qualifying prizes for Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short, Best Live-Action Short Over 15 Minutes, and Best Live-Action Short 15 Minutes and Under (the latter sponsored by SAGindie), plus student awards, special jury prizes including Best LGBTQ+ Short, Best Comedy Short, and a Desert Views Award, a Vimeo Staff Pick Award, and audience awards across multiple categories.

The festival also renews its commitment to developing the next generation of filmmakers through two initiatives. The Curator Fellowship gives young adults ages 18–25 in the Coachella Valley hands-on experience in film curation, culminating in the locally driven “Valley Visions” program, which screens on Tuesday, June 23 at 2 pm. The Filmmaker Bootcamp returns Thursday, June 25, bringing high school students from across the Coachella Valley directly into the world of filmmaking and industry professionals.

The ShortFest Forum returns to the Hilton Palm Springs, June 26–28, pairing working filmmakers with industry veterans for panels, roundtables, and hands-on sessions. Full Forum programming and jury announcements are expected on Tuesday, June 9.

The 2026 Palm Springs International ShortFest runs June 23–29. Tickets available June 4 at psfilmfest.org.
