Musicals and romance go hand-in-hand. Now add COVID to the mix, and you’re in for quite a ride. From China, Rongfei Guo’s musical short, Girl With A Thermal Gun, focuses on an essential worker: a young man in a supermarket (Li Chao). Forced isolation is taking a toll on him, and his only source of joy comes from his infatuation with the young woman (Hu Ji) who checks his temperature as he enters the store’s front door.

Like any good musical, this one moment of joy explodes into full song and dance, starting with a number about proper hand sanitation techniques. The two then glide smoothly down the store aisles, putting together orders for home delivery. Soon love and music infect the entire store.
Practically a music video, Girl With a Thermal Gun is pure fun and hopes to pull out of our present lockdown reality for a brief moment of joy and hope.
