Doe

By Bradley Gibson | November 4, 2019

His detective brother-in-law Carl (Matthew St. Patrick) helps him search for clues, and they find other men with similar tales of amnesia and extraordinary mental abilities. When he begins having terrifying dreams, his search for elements within them starts a long downward spiral that eventually leads o knowledge he’s better off not having.

“…saved by the few truly delightful performances and moments…”

This raggedy suffocating mess of a film can’t be saved by the few genuinely delightful performances and moments. Timothy Davis, as the main character, gives a solid performance, making as much as he can from the cheesy dialog. It’s a treat to see Matthew St. Patrick, who’s been largely missing from film and TV since his time on Six Feet Under. The cameo that really gets your heart racing is Mira Sorvino doing a little bit of nasty business as a heartless corporate executive who doesn’t seem to think social eugenics is a big deal. However, her character is little more than a video game NPC in a cutscene… she’s rolled out for name recognition for 3 minutes and then out.  It’s just long enough for you to get wistful about Mighty Aphrodite and The Replacement Killers, even Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, and then reflect on what a piece of crap Harvey Weinstein is.

The conceptual foundation borrows heavily from A Clockwork Orange, Identity, Shutter Island, and many others. The film seems to be trying to say something about race, something about identity, something about government indifference to individuality, and perhaps something about redemption. What it means to say isn’t clear, and the viewer’s confusion will only be exceeded by a complete lack of interest in what the message might be.
