Principal photography has wrapped on Herbert West: Reanimator, a contemporary reimagining of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic horror tale, starring Joseph Morgan (The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, Halo) and Katie Cassidy (Speed Demon, Accused: The Karen Read Story).
Directed by Michael Grossman from a screenplay by Jade Sandberg Wallis, the film drags Lovecraft’s obsessive scientist into the present day, following Herbert West (Morgan), a brilliant, secretive surgeon whose fixation on defeating death pushes him past the limits of medicine and morality. Cassidy co-stars as Dr. Kate Locke, a pathologist with a troubled past who gets pulled into West’s orbit — and his dangerous experiments with a serum that reanimates dead tissue.
Morgan and Cassidy were announced as the leads back in July. Morgan takes over a role most associated with Jeffrey Combs in Stuart Gordon’s 1985 cult classic Re-Animator, while Cassidy plays the newly expanded co-lead, Dr. Kate Locke.
The film shot in Alton, Illinois, with Woodlake Entertainment producing and financing. Producer Jeff Lewis leads the team, serving as an executive producer alongside Morgan, Cassidy, John Simmons, Roger Lewis, Keith Previte and David Trotti.

“Shooting Herbert West: Reanimator was, without a doubt, the most rewarding experience of my career to date,” Morgan said. “Collaborating with the entire team behind the film was an absolute thrill, as every day became an exploration into this emotionally complex man and the morally questionable world he inhabits.”
Cassidy echoed the sentiment: “I was beyond excited to take on the role of Dr. Kate Locke. She’s the new pathologist at Alton General. Her backstory is very intriguing and darker than one would expect. She is smart and fearless, willing to do whatever it takes to prove her work is greater than anything God can create.”
The story centers on West’s lifelong obsession with reanimation, rooted in a traumatic childhood incident involving his parents. Thirty years later, he’s still chasing a way to defeat death, and his work draws Kate Locke into his secret experiments after he reveals he can reanimate severed tissue. Their partnership forces both of them to reckon with what happens when they push past the line separating life and death.
“This movie will force you to examine what you believe is wrong or right, what is justified and what is excessive,” Morgan added. “It will have you questioning where you would draw the line.”
“This film is character driven with a horror element to it that will really keep you on the edge of your seat,” Cassidy said. “Also, there is a great cliffhanger at the end, so I think it’s safe to say this won’t be the last.”
With production wrapped, Herbert West: Reanimator now heads into post-production. A release date hasn’t been set, but the film is targeting 2027.
