A Tale of Samurai Cooking: A True Love Story

The title says it all! In this 2013 Japanese film directed by Yūzou Asahara set in the Edo Period, we get to see a samurai learning to cook and able to use his knife skills!

Secret Ingredient

In this 2017 Macedonian drama by Gjorce Stavreski the secret ingredient is surely not what you think. It is the story of a son who is trying to ease his father cancer-pain with a “space cake”. The thing is, the father has no idea what’s in the cake, and the drug was stolen!

Hannibal

The 2001 classic film by Ridley Scott about a cannibal starring Sir Anthony Hopkins managed to disgust and intrigued us as the psycho chef, Dr. Lecter, methodically prepare some “fried brain”…

Marie Antoinette

This one is for the sweet-tooth! Sofia Coppola 2006 movie about the French queen might be a wonderful quirky and stylish historical-ish biography but it is a visual feast of color, lavish sets, fantastic costumes, but also, tables dressed with all sorts of stunning dishes and cakes or pastries.

Goodfellas

One of Scorsese’s best, the 1990 crime film based on real events with, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta, features one of the most unexpected meal-making scenes in the history of Cinema. We see a mob boss cooking a refined meal in prison with whatever “utensils” he can find because, 1. prisoner got to eat,  and 2. he can get the ingredients in!

Killer Joe

William Friedkin 2011 black comedy crime adapted from a play of the same name is definitely not about cooking but it does prominently features fried chicken on its poster, which, should give you a hint! In the movie, Matthew McConaughey and Gina Gershon managed to ruin fried chicken in an unforgettable (maybe even unforgivable) yet repelling scene!

Lemon

This 2017 oddball comedy by Janicza Bravo is obviously named after something you can eat, and while it is a good film sporadically fun with a quirky story and a delightful cast, one song about food completely stole the show. Out of nowhere almost all the cast members, part of the protagonist’s eclectic Jewish family, starts singing along “A Million Matzo Balls”, and the tune’s rendition got stuck in viewer’s heads…forever!

The Help

Tate Taylor 2011 Civil Rights Movement era dramedy has garnered many acclaims for its star-studded ensemble of talented actresses such as Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Emma Stone, but let’s be honest here, we all remember one particular element of the film… Minny’s infamous “chocolate” pie that is as barf-inducing as the other infamous pie from, well, American Pie!

Oldboy

Most of us know or enjoy Park Chan-wook 2003 Korean film Oldboy as a gloriously violent vengeance one filled with thrilling shenanigans, but it would not be as memorable without a particular octopus eating scenes… Not sure how fun this “fun fact” is, but apparently this was real “real” octopus. So, bon appetit!
