Ancient Greek mythology is incredibly rich in colorful legends and heroes who performed incredible feats. Therefore, it should not be surprising that film directors began to use their images in their movies in order to add a little enchanting mystery to attract the general public by the names of the characters used. Everyone has heard such names as Hector, Theseus, Jason, Perseus, Achilles, Odysseus, and some can even tell a lot about the deeds that glorified them. Perhaps, one of the most famous names that come to mind is Hercules. The son of Zeus, half-god, half-man, he performed 12 deeds and became one of the most attractive personalities of Greek mythology.
In 2014, the film Hercules by Brett Ratner appeared on the screens. The trailer promised us a real show, which turned into a high-quality film, with a spectacular plot and cool jokes. Brett Ratner, famous for such movies as “New York, I Love You”, “Rush Hour”, “X-Men”, once again proved to be a very intelligent and incredibly talented director.
The Plot
It’s hard to be God, but being a half-god is even more difficult. You perform feats but receive no gratitude. So, having left the gates of Olympus, Hercules starts traveling around the world. Only a life-and-death fight can distract him from bitter thoughts and suffering.
Having gathered the like-minded people around him, he is no longer trying to be a hero. Now, he is a mercenary, who serves whoever pays the most. So, his path crossed with the Thracian king, who, for a very substantial reward, offered him to train the army in order to resist a dangerous enemy. However, very soon Hercules realizes that he made a mistake. The king’s intentions are not as clear as they seemed. Now, Greece is under threat, and perhaps even Olympus itself with all its Gods. So, isn’t it a good time to commit another feat and prevent the bloody plans from being implemented?
A Human in the Focus
In this picture, Hercules appears as an ordinary person with his inner conflict, own problems, doubts, and weaknesses, and not as an invincible hero, the son of an immortal deity sitting on the throne of Olympus. There have been too many immortal superheroes, who did not give the impression of intelligent and emotional characters. We are happy that the creators of “Hercules” decided to leave this tradition aside and reward their character with both heart and mind, thanks to which he is able not only to go to the goal, like a super-strong, but a completely soulless zombie, but to really make wise decisions and cope with countless hordes of opponents.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere of the film is exactly what many people expected to see. Mythic, a bit fabulous, with a proper number of terrible monsters from the legends, epic battles, etc. We were pleased to see no disgusting scenes that make you want to close your eyes, too vulgar jokes and rivers of blood. We believe that a myth is something very exciting and bright, it does not matter whether it is about a battle or love, the unnecessary details only interfere with the plot. However, the new story of Hercules meets the ideas about Hellenic-style aesthetics.
Computer Graphics
The computer graphics of the film are extremely good as of 2014. The battles of Hercules with the monsters impress. The beauty of mythical monsters, their frightening animal grace, wild power, and, most importantly, frightening naturalism blows the mind. Besides, the feeling of being immersed in a revived legend and the spectacularity of battles with perfectly staged fights really makes an impression of a good movie. Incredibly beautiful scenery and simply gorgeous landscapes that you just want to see not on the screen but in reality make the picture really involving.
To summarize, we would like to recommend watching the film “Hercules” to all fans of the epic show. This is a really bright and worthwhile movie that will not leave you indifferent.
