Whether you are 13-years-old or 49, you have grown up with her music, her performances and her. From “Mary Poppins,” the role that made her a household name to anyone with kids, to “The Sound of Music,” Julie Andrews has been an icon since she made her Broadway debut at the age of 19. Now, Andrews is back on the big-screen for a whole new generation to experience in Walt Disney Pictures’ The Princess Diaries.
Although she has been missing from the big-screen for quite some time, Andrews has certainly still remained busy and close to Disney. Her ABC television series “The Julie Andrews Hour” earned eight Emmy Awards and her children’s books Mandy and The Last of the Real Great Whangadoodles have maintained best-seller status for over 25 years. Now, with “The Princess Diaries” in theaters and two more children’s books on the way (Dumpy Saves Christmas and Dumpy and the Big Storm), Andrews is ready to be introduced to a whole new generation of children, and re-introduced to numerous generations that would consider her the closest thing Hollywood has to royalty.
Recently I got a chance to speak with Andrews at the Four Seasons Hotel as she publicized The Princess Diaries. Not only did we discuss her own status in the public’s eye as royalty, but also how that influenced her as she played her newest role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi. Before we were done, we talked about everything from how The Princess Diaries mirrors the real royal family to the status of musicals in Hollywood today.
