WHY STURGIS?

By Doug Brunell | June 12, 2006

History Channel fans take note, this documentary about Sturgis, South Dakota (as if there were any other) is for you. It delves into the town’s important geographical location, its history (and what a rich history it is), economics and the bike rally that made the city a household name.
To say that this is a history-rich town is an understatement. Even though most people know of it due to the bike rally, there isn’t a whole lot of time spent on that particular subject, though it is woven throughout the film and investigated. The film’s meat is in how the town got its name, its history with Native Americans, its ties to the Civil War and its role in the national anthem. This documentary actually has such a wealth of information that it almost seems like its creators could easily do another two or three films and still not get it all in. Despite that, the film never really feels rushed.
Take this one in if you’ve ever been curious about this town. If all you know about it is related to motorcycles, you only know about a tenth of the story.
