VIENNA IN THE DESERT

By David Finkelstein | July 2, 2010

A beautiful montage of shots of a desolate desert landscape, in which water, covered with saline scum, washes on bare rocks, among cacti and lone crows. These images are accompanied by the sound from a highly dramatic, tough guy/tough girl love scene from Nicholas Ray’s “Johnny Guitar.” (“Vienna” is the name of the female character.) Ruined love, ruined lives with a ruined, lonely desert. With this very simple pairing, filmmaker Wago Kreider allows us to see the emotional undercurrents which come pouring out of a highly charged landscape.
