VANCOUVER UNDERGROUND

By Film Threat Staff | November 21, 2002

The Fifth Annual Vancouver Underground Film Festival (November 21st – 24th) is bringing four solid days of the best and latest in underground films and videos, as well as multi-media works, web-art, and guerilla outdoor projections to the Blinding Light on Powell Street in Vancouver.
Opening the festival, November 21st at 8:30pm, is “Superman, Pornographer.” Other films to be screened include “On Vacation or In a Coma,” “Striking Vocal Chords” and “F**k the Wonder Years.”
Also at the fest will be the first-ever Canadian retrospective of the films of Lech Kowalski, organised with the assistance of San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Kowalski has spent over two decades in darkness, documenting underground personalities and cultures. His films are raw, unflinching portraits of gritty, black-eyed and snaggle-toothed drug and punk scenes. His work is often overwhelmingly intense, conjuring up a phantasmagorical yet entirely realistic vision of a nightmarish underworld.
