“TRIBUTE” WORLD PREMIERE AT AFI FEST

By Film Threat Staff | October 30, 2001

Pop music is a world of subcultures, and the strangest of these subcultures might very well be tribute bands. “Tribute” is a feature ‘rockumentary’ about these bands from first-time filmmakers and husband-and-wife team Kris Curry and Rich Fox, and is Executive Produced by Steven Soderbergh. “Tribute” documents the great lengths to which these tribute bands and their dedicated fans go in their attempt to recreate the experience of Kiss, Queen, Journey and others.
From Modesto, California, to Albany, New York, “Tribute” follows a handful of driven tribute bands as they attempt to live out their rock and roll fantasies. The band members weather a dizzying array of obstacles to their success: soul-sucking day jobs, demoralizing member defections, and a lead singer who takes his impersonation of Gene Simmons more than a little too far. Like “This is Spinal Tape” before it, “Tribute” shows us the funny, and sometimes disturbing flip side of the quest for rock and roll stardom.
“Tribute” premieres at the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, November 3rd at 7:00 at the Egyptian Theater. For tickets, call 1-866-AFI-FEST or visit AFIfest.com.
