The 2000 Toronto International Film Festival was held from [ September 7th to the 16th, 2000. ] The Festival, now in its 25th year, is one of the most well-respected film events in the world, and is often home to breakout film achievements. This year’s winners were recently announced, and are:
[ TORONTO CITY AWARD for BEST CANADIAN FEATURE FILM ] ^ “waydowntown,” directed by Gary Burns. ^ Special Mention: “Maelström,” directed by Denis Villeneuve. ^ Special Mention: Karen Walton, writer, “Ginger Snaps”.
[ Citytv AWARD for BEST CANADIAN FIRST FEATURE FILM ] ^ “La Moitie Gauche Du Frigo” (“The Left-Hand Side of the Fridge”) directed by Philippe Falardeau. ^ Special Mention: “Red Deer,” directed by Anthony Couture.
[ BENSON & HEDGES FILM PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD ] ^ “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” directed by Ang Lee. ^ Second Place: “The Dish,” directed by Rob Sitch. ^ Third Place: “Billy Elliot,” directed by Stephen Daldry.
[ NATIONAL FILM BOARD-JOHN SPOTTON AWARD (Short Film) ] ^ “Le Chapeau,” directed by Michele Cournoyer. ^ Special Mention: “Ernest,” directed by Keith Beharman.
[ VOLKSWAGEN DISCOVERY AWARD (tie) ] ^ “George Washington,” directed by David Gordon Green and “101 Reykjavik,” directed by Baltasar Kormakur. ^ Second Place: (tie) “The Day I Became A Woman,” directed by Marziyeh Meshkini and “The Iron Ladies,” directed by Youngyooth Thongkonthun.
[ FIPRESCI FOREIGN PRESS AWARD ] ^ “Bangkok Dangerous,” directed by Oxid and Danny Pang.
