Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short, and quite rightfully too. Hemingway’s far-too-long book about a fisherman’s epic battle is wonderfully brought down to just the right length, and regains its majesty and relevance in the process.
What’s that? You don’t care about fishing? Fine, look at the pretty pictures instead. Russian-born director Alexander Petrov (The Cow, The Mermaid) painstakingly painted over 29,000 images with pastel oils on sheets of glass to tell this story, and the result is really a living painting that, particularly in the seaside scenes, will take your breath away. Marvellous.
